United States Department of Energy (DOE) Requirements

As fire protection engineers (FPEs), knowing the applicable codes and standards will set us up for project success. The United States Department of Energy (DOE) has its own unique rules and regulations that most FPEs are unfamiliar with. Join us for a 60-minute training to discuss DOE-specific requirements and how to ensure compliance with local, state, and national codes and standards.

Ian De Vries, a fire prevention specialist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), will provide information on how to identify and comply with DOE rules and regulations for non-nuclear facilities. He will start with a brief history of LBNL and a discussion of DOE Order 420.1c and DOE Standard 1066. A look at NFPA standards that are enforced at LBNL will provide insight to the differences between California and national requirements. To wrap things up, examples will be provided of recent and ongoing projects at LBNL which showcase how conflicting code requirements can influence a project.

Registration includes snacks, appetizers and up to two drinks.

Event Schedule:

5:00 - 5:15 pm - Updates from SFPE Board of Directors, Michael Wojcik

5:15 - 6:15 pm - DOE Requirements Presentation and Q&A

6:15 - 7:00 pm -  Networking
